The sensitometric characteristics of virtually all unprocessed photographic materials gradually change with time, causing loss in sensitivity, a change in contrast, a growth in fog level, or possibly all three. In color films, the rates at which the various color-sensitive layers respond are not necessarily the same, thus the color balance of the material can also change.

General Recommendation

In general, the lower the temperature at which a film is stored, the slower will be its rate of sensitometric change during aging. Raw stock in original package storaged within six month should be stored at a temperature of 13℃ (55℉) or lower during the entire storage period if optimum film properties are to be retained. If it must be kept longer than six months, it should be storaged at -18°to -23℃ (0°to -10℉). Meanwhile, it is not suggested to be storaged at humidity higher than 70％. Exposed film should be stored at -18℃ (0℉).

The Dangers of Not Monitoring the Temperature&Humidity

When stored in humid or warm conditions, or experiences frequent handling, the older film becomes defective. It may acquire a vinegar-like scent as the cellulose degrades and releases acetic acid. When one film releases acid, it threatens the surrounding film. Moisture poses one of the greatest threats to film, as it only takes a few days for film and negatives to begin degrading and change in color when exposed to water or high humidity levels. With time, bacteria and mold cause the properties of film to separate, dissolve and decompose.
