Temperature is the main factor of environmental production when it comes to growth. Each culture has a minimum basic temperature at which it grows at the maximum rate for its optimum temperature.

If, for example, all plants were grown at 13°C (55°F) overnight, this would be ideal for primroses, but the growth rate of ferns and lantanas would be much slower. No single temperature is perfect for all crops.

Greenhouse crops can be divided into three basic categories: cool-season crops, with a base temperature below 4°C (39°F), intermediate crops, with a base temperature between 4-7°C (40-45°F), and warm-season crops, with a base temperature of 8°C (46°F) or more.

The basic temperature is the temperature at or below which the plants stop growing. Ideally, a grower should keep cold season and warm season crops in separate greenhouses so that they can be grown at their respective ideal temperatures.

The costs associated with opening and heating a greenhouse earlier in the season should not be the only factor considered when determining the ideal temperature for greenhouse production.

Plants grown at lower temperatures grow more slowly and take longer to flower. On the other hand, they often have thicker stems, better stem branching and larger flowers when they reach maturity. This results in a superior quality crop that can be sold at a higher price, helping to absorb the higher production costs.

Once you've understood the importance of temperature in horticulture, temperature monitoring is essential.
